Target Audience

How do you find out about your target audience? 

I write mainly for children and mainly for the young girl in me who wanted adventure stories along the lines of The Famous Five and The Hardy Boys.  At the age of about 9 or 10 I wanted to be like Nancy Drew but to also have the romance and fiery temper of Anne of Green Gables (and her gorgeous red hair!).
